Hi there

I have installed the latest version of the free acesef software and have just checked it is up to date.

I am running joomla Version 1.5.22.

I am sure I have set up everything ok and renamed the htaccess file but when I enter the home page URL of my website I it trys to access it then in firefox I get the following message:

"The page isn't redirecting properly

Firefox has detected that the server is redirecting the request for this address in a way that will never complete."

I have looked everywhere for a solution - has anyone got any ideas?

Ok I got it to work by

setting Append ItemID to SEF to YES

Is this what would have been recommended? I.e. is it the best solution or am I likely to get issues further down the line?

It is coused by "Duplicated URLs", appending ItemID has made your URLs unique that's why it has solved your issue. You can also follow the instructions mentioned in the following article to solved Duplicated URLs issue:
