Each time I update Acesef I lost all my urls. That was probably because I was under the impression that I had to uninstall the old before installing the new. Always had to backup everything to get it going again.
Then I found that the button on the control panel is not as I thought to upgrade (as in free-version to pro-version), but also to update Acesef. So I gave that a go. So I enabled the ftp-layer. I got a long list of file and directories not being writeble. Disabled the ftp-layer, still would not install.
On my localhost there was no problem, probably because everything is always writable in windows (WAMP). So, from the succesfull local update, I uploaded the backend and frontend component directories and the system plugin and language files. It all seemed to woprk online. I purged everthing and noticed that (of course!) my extensions config needed to be re-configured (again!). After all that I keep geeting loads of 404's. I purged the 404's, but nothing. Articles in full view just give 404's.
And one menu-item keep duplicating:

Kunena has all new url's for everything, breaking each link from google. I been through all this 3 months ago, having to make a 180-items 301 redirect-list in htaccess. I'm not doing that again.
Realy freaks me out. I dare no longer update Acesef. I am terrified! My client asked me to get those urls out of the meta-description. So I thought updating acesef would solve that. Good thing I also test this on a schadow-site online on the same server, so the live site is intact. However the schadowsite is in ruins, and I don't know how to get those urls out of de description-meta's.
So questions are:
How to do a normal update? One where I don't loose my configuration, all extension configurations and sef urls (also those locked ones).
and
Is there a way to get those url's out of the meta description in the old version of acesef? (so I doon't have to update).

You upgrade structure came from J! 1.0 or sh404SEF. As we've described even in the initial page of AceSEF (see bottom), Upgrade page without need of uninstallation:

If you recieve any red message after uprading it means that AceSEF is not upgrade. You should apply what the red message is saying, generally file or folder not writable.
This also means that your server is not J! compatible at all.
So to do a normal update, go to AceSEF control panel and click on Upgrade button near to the latest version or download the new version and upload it to Upgrade section.
What do you mean with "get those urls out of de description-meta's" ?

this is in an older version. seems to be fixed in the newer version, but I can't use that because of the above described problems.
I don't get any red text.

I never had such an issue but if it doesn't appear in the new version then I would suggest to upgrade.
When? Where? don't you get any red text. Check if the Enable Version checker is set to Yes in AceSEF=>Configuration

then I would suggest to upgrade.
I would like to but it breaks my site beyond repair, so I won't. Do you want access to the dev-site to check it out?

Your version is currently 1.3.4 but there are a lot of 404 pages, I'll check it.

In fact I checked it 3 weeks ago and just checked again but frankly I didn't get whats going on. I mean the issue consist on no URL is saved in AceSEF tables but don't know why
