TOPIC: zoo multiple categories
#16125
zoo multiple categories 1 Month ago
Hi,

I have a problem which I believes centres on the zoo extensions "add category to url" setting and the fact that an item can be in multiple categories within zoo. A headache for acesef (and me) for sure!

This can be set to no, all categories or only last one.

If I understand this correctly
"no" = don't use zoo categories in the url
"all categories" = if an item is in multiple categories, then a SEF url will be generated for each category
"only last one" = if an item is in multiple categories, then only generate a SEF for the last (based on what???) category

Now, I don't want all categories generated due to the duplicate content risks (could we have a canonical field in the SEF url table??)

I'd just like one category, and the zoo item has a primary category, which surely is what should be used? Maybe zoo has changed since the acesef extension was originally designed, but if I understand this correctly, "only last one" should be changed to "use zoo primary category"

In the case of multiple categories, acesef seems to use the primary category, unless its coincidence in my tests. And that Sef url works fine. However, when using the website, and accessing the category views in zoo - of the OTHER categories, the link that is generated when you mouse over or click the "show details" is trying to access the item via the current category part of the url.

e.g. item "mybar" has primary category of bar, but both bar and restaurant categories are set.
bars/mybar sef url is correctly generated, and no restaurant/mybar sef url- again correctly.

But even though the correct sef urls have been set in acesef, when I hover over or choose ANY link, whether from the bars or the restaurants category, acesef tries to route me to restaurant/mybar - generating a 404. I'm confused about this, am I correct to say that it is trying to dynamically construct this link based on the "only last one" extension setting?

At no time does restaurant/mybar ever physically exist in the sef urls table.

OK, Can I ask if I understand this correctly? Has anyone else experienced difficulties?
I know there are a couple of workarounds (no categories or all categories in the url) but these are not what I would like. I believe primary category is the correct logic for acesef to use here.

Any comments on this?
Thx for reading!

OK, I've analyzed the Zoo 2 database structure and it seems we can grab the primary category, currently the first found category is added. One question, is the "Primary Category" a required field?

It looks like it isn't. The admin can add categories and build a category hierarchy. And the item can be assigned to none, one or many of these categories. I don;t know if there is a placeholder category in the db for those assigned to "none" though.

If you want me to raise anything in the zoo2 forum, let me know Denis.
Thx,
Simon

Hmm, it seems to be a reflect of the "freedom" conception of Zoo I mean you're free to add or not.

OK, I'm going to make the extension to look first for the primary category, if not found then search for another one.

Will this change be reflected in the zoo extension parameters? - the "add category to url" setting -If so, then perfect Denis!
